How to Merge Custom Field into Tracking Link

Here we describe how you can merge one or several custom fields into the tracking link.

How to Merge a Single Custom Field into Tracking Link

Important! You MUST merge the Email field into the tracking link in order G-Lock Analytics can calculate unique opens, clicks and unsubscribes and pass the email addresses of the recipients to your account.

To merge the Email field into the tracking links, check the "Use merge tag" option when you add/edit the campaign in your account.

Type the field name in the format supported by that the Merge feature in your email program. Examples: %%Email%%, [Email], !*EMAIL*!, etc.

Click Save. You will be redirected to the "Tracking Links and Code".

Copy your original link, for example, http://www.expertarticles.com/iawpro.html

Click on "Add Link" button.

Paste the original link.

Click on "Add Link".

add original link

G-Lock Analytics will convert your original link into the tracking link. You will see the tracking link at the right side.

The Email field will be included into the tracking link. Example:

http://www.expertarticles.com/r.php?c/let/%%Email%%

Note: to see the tracking link, make sure you checked the "Show tracking links" option.

copy tracking link

Copy the tracking link with the merged field and use it in your email message. During the email sending, your email program will replace the field name with the real recipient's email address taken from your address book.

When the recipients click on the link, their email addresses will be passed to your account.

How to Merge Several Custom Fields into Tracking Link

Sometimes email senders need to embed several custom fields, for example Email and UserID, into the tracking link. Those fields are then used to identify the recipient on their server to access certain content.

Note: G-Lock Analytics records only the email addresses of the recipients who open the email and click on the link. If in addition to the Email field you merge another custom field into the link, that field will not be passed to your account on G-Lock Analytics, it will be passed to the browser only.

To merge several custom fields into the tracking link:

Add your original link to G-Lock Analytics. Example:

http://www.expertarticles.com/iawpro.html

Convert the original link into the tracking link.

Copy the tracking link and paste it into your email message instead of the original link. Example:

http://www.expertarticles.com?c/kw4/%%Email%%

This link must already contain the merged Email field in order G-Lock Analytics can record unique clicks. (Note: to merge the Email field into the tracking links, be sure to check the “Use Merge Tag” option when you add the campaign and type the field name in the appropriate format supported by the Merge feature in your email sending program).

To merge another custom field into the tracking link, add the ? characters after the Email field and type your custom field in the right format, for example:

http://www.expertarticles.com?c/kw4/%%Email%%?userid=%%ID%%

Note that you need to paste the tracking link and merge your custom field into the link in both HTML source and plain text part of the message.
